答案                   A Word about "Teaching to the Test"
It seems that testing has replaced teaching in most of our schools. Just examine the students’ school week and you will find it is framed by pretests, drills; tests, and retests. Preparation for tests has practically been taken as the acquisition of learning competence and skills. Detailed tests are imposed to ensure the so-called "quality education."
Many people are questioning the phenomenon of "teaching to the test." But can we do anything about it? Hardly. Ours is an age of test-taking, and tests are like guards posted at the doorway of almost every educational level and of many occupations. As we know, teachers and administrators are well intentioned; they are under intense and relentless pressure. They impose all sorts of drills and tests on students in the hope that worthwhile learning will occur.
To be fair, tests are no evils by themselves. Well designed tests can show us what we have learned about a subject and help make our new knowledge permanent. Sometimes tests can even help us to know ourselves—to know our strengths as well as weaknesses. Unfortunately the actual purpose of exams and tests has long been ignored. All our attention goes to grades and scores. No one gives a thought to the nature and quality of what is taught.
It is difficult to prevent or reverse this trend of "teaching to the test." But sensitive and creative students can still make the best of the tests they are taking. Benjamin Franklin says, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." So we may take testing as a sort of "involvement" which may help inspire in us a love of learning itself.
