How People Spend Their Holidays
The way people spend their holidays has changed a great deal over the past few years. In 1999, 45% of the people spent their holidays at home, the figure dropping sharply to 9% in 2005. It seems that people are becoming more and more mobile and they would like to explore the entertainments in the outside world.
The seaside still has its varied attraction to people. The rate has dropped slightly from 38% in 1999 to 31% in 2005.There might be a tendency of further decreasing in the future because of the congestion and pollution: An over-crowded and polluted beach would certainly drive visitors away.
The table shows that a great number of people spent their holidays traveling abroad. The rate more than doubled in 2005 (29%) as compared with 1999 (12%). And this trend is most likely to continue: more and more countries are only too happy to have Chinese tourists while an increasing number of Chinese citizens can well afford an expensive overseas journey.
In the table is shown another remarkable tendency: The rate of camping was rising from 5% in 1999 to 31% in 2005 —jumping more than six times. There are many reasons behind this increase. For one thing, more families now have their own cars and they can drive themselves far away from the maddening crowd in cities to a quiet and peaceful weekend retreat. For another, people themselves are getting more adventurous, eager to get closer to nature. During a camping trip, people are able to do things on their own: to rediscover the real beauty of nature and collect new memories.
