The amount and type of food we eat has a great effect on our health. Our body needs a continuous supply of energy to fuel the continuous processes of life, such as our heartbeat and breathing. If we eat a well-balanced diet, it can reduce our risk of various diseases as well as help us to maintain a healthy weight. (16) We need energy to grow and repair our body’s tissues, and to power our muscles for movement. This energy is provided by our food and drink. As well as getting enough energy, we need to make sure our diet includes necessary nutrients such as protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. There is good evidence that eating a healthy diet can reduce our risk of illnesses like fatness, heart disease and several cancers. (17)Healthy eating is about eating the right amount and balance of food. Eating the right balance of food from the main food groups is important for daily health. There are four main food groups; fruit and vegetables, dairy foods, meat and beans, fat and sugar. We should aim to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Fruit and vegetables cut the risk of disease, including some cancers and heart disease. (18) Milk and dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt are rich in protein. They are also a good source of vitamin D and calcium, which keep our bones strong and healthy. Meat and beans also provide us with protein. Fat is the main source of energy—each gram provides us with about nine calories. In small amount, fat is important for good health.
