Earlier this year, I was staying with my friend in England and when she said that she would have a big celebration for her 15th birthday, my heart sank a little. Honestly, I could be a bit worried about going to parties. I feel self-conscious in dresses so I never know what to wear for a party. I would also wonder whether I would know anyone there and whether I could mingle with the people I don’t know. But, of course, I threw her a smile and said I was looking forward to it, because I knew how important the party was to her.
Well, the party turned out to be great. It was held in a beautifully converted barn in a rural location on the edge of Sheffield. The venue had a polished wooden floor and was decorated with some tasteful fairy lights and candles. Music was playing inside and the food was provided by her friends mostly. There was also a small bar serving drinks, for which my host picked up the bill at the end. My friend has a really wide network of friends and she almost invited all of them to the party. So apart from her family, there were also old friends, people she knew from her voluntary activities, former colleagues and her neighbours.
I really had a joyful night and made a lot of new acquaintances. They were those interesting people that I might otherwise never come across. It was great fun trying to discover how we all came here and what connected us to the "hostess with the mostest". I had a really wonderful time. Next time she offers to host a party, I will sincerely want to be part of it.
