I’d like to describe an invention that has dramatically changed people’s lives. It’s the smartphone. I think most people would agree that it has changed people’s lives to a large extent.
To be honest, I’m not sure of the exact year when the first smartphone was invented. However, it has developed very rapidly since 2000. The introduction of iPhone in 2007 was the beginning of the era of smartphones, so I’d like to focus on iPhone in my talk today.
The first iPhone has revolutionised people’s understanding of phones. To start with, the appearance. Before 2007, phones were with small screens and keyboards. However, iPhone forsook physical keyboards and used a large interactive touch screen instead which allowed its users to have a better using experience. This design had greatly influenced the other smartphones that were invented later on. All smartphone brands followed suit. They abandoned the physical keyboard and enlarged the screen. More than a decade has passed, and the iPhones today still look very similar to the first one. So we can see that the design of iPhone is very classical. Secondly, smartphones have changed the way people use their phones. Before the invention of smartphones, people only used phones for text messages and phone calls. But now, people can do a lot of other things with all the new functions, such as surfing the Internet, taking pictures and listening to music.
Smartphones facilitate people’s daily life, help people stay connected with each other in this digitalised age. That’s why I think it’s an important invention.
