答案     Shopping centres, especially huge out of town shopping centres, have come to be a place where people spend their free time. They come to browse around the shops, eat at one of the many fast food outlets and go home happily laden with new clothes and all sorts of other things, having enjoyed a day’s ’retail therapy’.
    Everyone has to shop, even though Internet shopping is increasingly important. Everyone needs clothes, shoes, food, books, gadgets, jewellery and so on, but today people buy and buy and buy—to make themselves feel good, and huge shopping centres encourage their rather unhealthy pastime.
    If public parks and sports facilities are planned when housing is built, they will be there for those who wish to use them. To build houses and not leave space for such facilities means that these things cannot then be built. Public parks can help encourage children’s activities, picnics for all the family, fun runs, and above all they provide a green space where trees can reduce the level of pollution. Sports facilities, such as swimming pools, golf courses, gyms, hockey and football pitches, all help to encourage people to keep fit and use their leisure time in a way that encourages health, so that they are really important in cities .
    It is difficult today to say whether emphasis should be on shopping or recreation facilities because the size of a shopping centre depends on the number of people able and willing to use it, and this to a certain extent is true of sports facilities and parks. It might be that in a city, two small neighbourhood parks are better than one huge one. Small parks are easily used by local children and families and can have play areas containing equipment, such as slides, swings and climbing frames. A bigger park can accommodate walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Ft really is important to match the available facilities, both for shopping and for leisure, to demand present and future, whilst also considering the number of such facilities and their size.
