问题                  NOTICE OF INCREASE IN COLLEGE FEES
The president of Springfield College announces a 10% increase in the student activity fee and a 10% increase in rent for all dormitory rooms and apartments on campus. The new fee schedule will take effect on August 25, the beginning of the new academic year. The fee increases will help the college to pay for a new gymnasium building on the north side of campus. The gymnasium will include a state-of-the-art workout room, racquetball courts, a dance and martial arts studio, and saunas for men and women. Architectural drawings of the new gymnasium are on display in the lobby of the library building.
Now cover the passage and listen to the recording. When you hear the question, begin preparing your response.

The woman expresses her opinion about the fee increase. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
Now listen to two students as they discuss the notice.
M:  Oh no, the college is announcing a 10 percent fee increase. Why do they think they can do that? Our fees are already too high!
W:  This is the first time they’ve raised the tees since I’ve been a student here. It’s only 10 percent—that’s not too bad. And you don’t live on campus, so the rent increase doesn’t even affect you.
M:  You live on campus, don’t you? Do you want to pay a higher rent next year?
W:  Well, I think a new gymnasium is a fantastic idea, so it’s all for a good cause. And the new gym is something that will benefit everyone, even you, because students who live off campus can use the facilities. The old gym is really small, and it’s always crowded when I’m there. The showers are kind of old and kind of disgusting, and there are no saunas.
M:  Yeah, I know what you mean.
W:  I was actually thinking of joining a health club in town, but the membership fee is really expensive there. So, for me, it’s great news having a nice new gym on campus. The fee increase will come to less than I’d have to pay to join a club in town. So, who am I to complain?
