M: Normally, movies rely on complex plots, dramatic action scenes, witty dialogues
and attractive characters. But slice-of-life films are different. They deliberately
present their stories as plain, realistic experiences.
One of the main reasons we call them "slice-of-life" film is because they focus
on a very short time period. Most two or three hour films actually cover a much
longer period of time. You might see months or even years pass, with just
important events highlighted. But a slice-of-life film is often shot in real-time, and
it shows events exactly as they happen. For example, Night on Earth is a slice-of-
life film. Or five slices of life, really-it’s made up of five continuous scenes that
take place in taxis in different cities. In the New York scene, a passenger gets into
a cab with a cab driver who doesn’t know how to drive the car. The passenger
and cab driver switch places and have a conversation. They keep talking until
they reach the passenger’s destination, and then the story ends.
Another key characteristic of a slice-of-life film is the lack of production
techniques. While the majority of films use background music, quick editing,
and special effects to entertain audiences, slice-of-life movies are simpler. The
German film Forest for the Trees is a good example of this. There is no special
drama or action. No big conflict or conclusion. And the characters are normal,
everyday people. One reviewer commented that watching the movie was like
following someone around through the mundane moments of their life. What’s
the point then? Well, it’s precisely because the movie seems so realistic that we
deeply sympathize with the main character. He seems just like one of us.

答案  [Topic] The professor explains that a slice-of-life film is a film which uses a couple of
techniques to create a more realistic effect.
[Example 1] The first is the way that slice-of-life movies are filmed in real-time. Whereas
most movies show highlights of a long period, these films cover a very short
period. Like, in Night on Earth, there’s one scene where the camera just follows a
passenger and a cab driver in a taxi for the whole ride.
[Example 2] The other is the absence of music or fancy effects. The camera just follows one
character around, and there’s no plot or interesting dialogue, which is just what
happened in the famous movie Forest for the Trees. This technique actually makes
the main character seem more appealing in some ways, because he seems more
   real.
