答案
Since the industrial revolution in the 1700s, the economies in industrialized countries have been based on the burning of fossil fuels which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. There is no denying the fact that air pollution is an extremely serious problem; the city authorities should take strong measures to deal with it. One of the environmental problems is the global warming caused by this. The use of CFCs also adds to the warming problem. It also depletes the ozone layer which protects us from damaging ultraviolet rays. Therefore, it is safe to say that most of the environmental problems in the world have been caused by industrialized countries. Take the United States for instance. It is consuming disproportionately large amounts of resources and adding comparable amounts of waste to the environment.
However, over the last one hundred years or so, Western people’s awareness of environmental problems has been growing. So have science and technology to overcome environmental problems. London is not a foggy city anymore, and the Danube River is cleaner than before.
Developing countries, on the other hand, are catching up, both in lifestyles and in their share of environmental damage. These countries typically have larger populations and lower levels of conservation consciousness. When industry develops in these countries, it has substantial effect on the world’s environment. There have been bad cases of the poisoning of people and extinction of animal species because of pollution.
Though developing countries are causing more and more of the world’s environmental problems, their wish for a better life and their measures for fulfilling the wish should not be inhibited. A latest nationwide survey shows that primary and middle school students have a stronger sense of environmental protection than their parents do. They should be given allowances to increase their awareness of environmental issues and their abilities to make a cleaner environment.
