Listen to part of a conversation between two students.
M: Hi, Lisa! How are you?
W: Very busy—too busy, actually.
M: How’s basketball going?
W: Great—the team is doing very well this year.
Unfortunately, though, I may have to quit the team.
M: Quit? Why?
W: I love playing, but basketball takes too much of my time, and I have less time for the debate club, my other activity. I have to make a decision soon, and it’s very hard. I have to give up one or the other.
M: Don’t give up basketball! You’re one of the best players, and it would hurt the team.
W: If I quit basketball, I’d have more time for debate, but I’d disappoint the team. Besides, I’d get less exercise. On the other hand, quitting the debate club might hurt my chance at getting a debate scholarship, which I’m almost certain to get, according to the debate coach.
M: It’s a tough choice, but maybe the scholarship is more important. You can always play basketball next year, or just play a little for exercise. Besides, don’t you want to go to law school? Debate is good preparation for that.
W: I do want to go to law school, but I also love basketball. My problem is, which is less essential now?
The students discuss possible solutions to the woman’s problem. Describe the problem. Then state what you think the woman should do, and explain why.
