Listen to part of a conversation between two students.
W: How’s it going in your history class?
M: Not very well, actually. I can’t get my study partner to help with the oral report we’re doing together. We’re getting a joint grade for this project, but so far, he hasn’t contributed much.
W: Oh. That is a problem. You’d better talk to him. You need to get him to do his part.
M: The problem is, he has lots of ideas—big ideas—but we need to focus more. We have to limit our topic to something realistic. He can come up with a lot of ideas, but then he doesn’t want to actually do the research. He thinks I should do that part.
W: Couldn’t you let him know that he has to do more? Make him help you. Divide the research equally. Write down a list and give it to him. Make him responsible for specific things.
M: I could do that, but it may not work.
W: Another thing you could do... You should talk to your professor. Let your professor know that you are the one doing most of the work.
M: I don’t know... I could do that.
W: You should. And then, just do the best you can.
The students discuss possible solutions to the man’s problem. Describe the problem. Then state which of the solutions you prefer and explain why.
