Q: I heard that an exhibition opened recently in Beijing that showcases the remains of an ancient sunken ship. I wonder if you can tell me something about it.
A:好啊。
Q: I have a keen interest in underwater cultural heritage, so I want to go and see this exhibition to find out how the ship sank and how the underwater archeological work was done in recovering it.
Q: Is it China’s first national survey on underwater cultural relics? It must be a landmark accomplishment for China’s underwater cultural heritage protection.
Q: So I see. What has China done to ensure that underwater cultural relics are protected?

With pleasure. The ship is called Huaguangjiao One. It was discovered by a fisherman in the South China Sea in 1996. The ship had lain underwater for almost 800 years, and it is full of mystery. It was a merchant ship loaded with porcelain and bronze ware.
The exhibition consists of five parts which tell the ship’s story, including what it originally looked like when setting sail. All cultural relics taken from the sunken ship are placed in display rooms in a way as how they looked when they were found underwater.
Actually, it was one of the busiest international maritime trading routes in history, sometimes known as the Maritime Silk Road. It is along this route that ancient Chinese shipped their porcelain, silk and other commodities overseas. As a result, there are quite a few sunken ships along this route. With regard to Huaguangjiao, its survey and protection have indeed been a great success.
The Chinese government attaches great importance to the protection of underwater cultural heritage. It has become an important part of China’s ocean strategy. Significant progress has been made in the last two decades. The National Underwater Archaeological Research Center was founded in 1987, which has trained over 80 archaeological divers. We now have a whole set of laws, regulations and measures in place to protect underwater cultural heritage.
