    今天，我们在此召开水与卫生亚洲对话会，回顾和总结近年来亚洲水与卫生工作所取得的经验，共同探讨和交流亚洲国家在水与卫生领域的发展趋势和解决途径，这对联合国水与卫生发展目标在亚洲各国的实现，对本地区经济社会的可持续发展必将产生重要的影响，起到积极的推动作用。
    中国作为世界上人口最多的发展中国家，在全面建设小康社会、加快推进现代化进程中，面临着水资源问题的严峻挑战。
    中国政府正在大力倡导并认真落实科学发展观，坚持人与自然和谐的理念，以解决人民群众最关心、最直接、最现实的利益问题为重点，对水资源进行合理开发、高效利用、优化配置、科学管理、全面节约、有效保护和综合治理，推动传统水利向现代水利、可持续发展水利转变，保障经济社会可持续发展。

Although Asia has achieved remarkable socioeconomic development in recent years, a considerable number of countries and regions in Asia are still challenged by water shortage, pollution of water and backward sanitary conditions, which threatens people’s health, production activities and livelihood.
Today, we convene the Asian Regional Dialogue on Water and Sanitation at this venue to review and summarize Asian experience of water and sanitation in recent years, explore and exchange ideas on trends of development and solution to problems with regard to water and sanitation in Asian countries. Such efforts will no doubt become an important driver that facilitates the realization of MDG (Millennium Development Goals) target on water and sanitation in Asian countries and sustainable socioeconomic development of this region.
China is the most populous developing country in the world. While advancing towards an all-round well-off society and accelerated modernization, our country is confronted with severe water challenge.
As such, the Chinese government is vigorously advocating and earnestly implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development and adheres to the philosophy of Harmony between Man and Nature. Focusing on the most direct and practical interest-oriented issues that are of the greatest concern to the public in general, we advocate rational development, efficient use, optimal distribution, scientific management, comprehensive conservation, effective protection and integrated treatment of water resources so as to promote the transformation from traditional water management to modern and sustainable water management and ensure sustainable socioeconomic development.
