Demonstrations by Muslims in northern Nigeria protesting against European cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad have ended in violence and deaths. Police said most of the fatalities were in the City of Maiduguri, where protests descended into a rioting. It began with a peaceful demonstration, organized by Islamic groups against the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Witnesses say demonstrators were chanting "Ala Akbar" when police fired teargas to disperse the crowd. As they fled, mobs attacked churches and businesses owned by the Christian minority in the city. The Nigeria national police spokesman Haz Iwendi said 15 people were killed and 11 churches were destroyed in the rioting. He said a curfew had been imposed in the city, and the military had been called in to patrol the streets alongside the police.
