Are one’s character traits inherited or nurtured?
Looking at the great variety of personality traits, we can not help but wonder," Where do people get all these characteristics" ? There have been long and heated discussions as to the answer to this controversial question. Instead of giving a one-sided answer, I would like to look at both sides of the picture.
On the one hand, there are people who contend that a character trait is simply a matter of inheritance, since children tend to resemble their parents in terms of temperament. Man is the product of their biology, the core of which is genes, predetermining a large spectrum of human traits from color preferences to language ability. And of course genetic features go from one generation to another. Therefore, it is more likely for a father of few words to have a son who doesn’t speak much either. Genetics also explains why siblings tend to be similar because they inherit the same genetic features from the same parents. With a fair amount of scientific evidence to back them up, the proponents of the inheritance perspective are pretty tough in maintaining their stand on this issue.
On the other hand, the opponents may argue that nurture rather than nature is of essence here, drawing on the fact that identical twins brought up in different ways may grow up to have totally different characters. Human genome sequences may have something to say in some aspects, but not every. "Like father like son" is sometimes true, not because the sun has inherited everything from the father, but because he is brought up by the father. In another case, if the son is separated from his father after birth, and then taught in a totally different way, will he still be the same person as he is in the first case? Will he still find his way back to his own father? Education, including home education and school education, is the creator of one’s temperament. That is why the role of education can never be overestimated. So when a child receives disciplines and instructions on what to do and what not to do, or follows a role model, or reads a collection of books by a certain writer, his character is in the making. The way he is educated and cultivated is bound to leave some marks on his character traits. And that we call nurture.
Balancing the opposing perspectives, I suggest that we integrate the two instead of antagonizing them, for neither can forge the character traits of a man single-handedly. With the innate genome as the groundwork, and with the acquired cultivation as the sublimation, man can be the happy result of both nature and nurture.
