What College Students Seek in Friends:Similarities or Differences?
It is easy to understand why people tend to make friends with those that are similar to them, and we can figure out how making friends with different people can help US to become better selves. So,when college students are faced with such a question, how should they choose?
Similarity can easily be translated into familiarity, and those students who share some similarities would quickly find each other attractive. With such a familiarity, the students can easily get the comfort.easiness and closeness they need, especially when they get into a new environment and what they were used to are no longer around. The similarities would take many forms, and students from the same province, the same majors and those with same interests and hobbies can all create the sense of similarity, and thus familiarity. Many years after graduation, those memories of communicating, with our friends to great depth and the joy we get when we share our feelings with these friends will always be with us.
Although differences would mean distance in many situations, the benefits of having some friends who are different from us should also be paid attention to. For many college students, such a proposal may sound challenging. It surely is difficult to get out of the protection we have for ourselves when meeting new people, not to mention those who are different from us in terms of personalities, interests and background. But making friends of this nature is also a process of learning, which requires not only courage but also efforts. With this, we would understand the policy of some universities to put students from different majors in a dormitory, in an attempt to break the possible boundaries students may have when they spend almost all their time with other students from the same majors. The memories of these friends would be different from those of the similar friends. These friends with differences will be equally important in our memories when we look back. We will remember these friends when their id east and perspectives challenged or even changed our perceptions, and when they brought in fresh and new deals to enrich our lives.
So the ideal arrangement would be a combination of the two kinds of friends. We should cherish the opportunities we have to meet someone who can share with us something so profoundly, especially at a time when everything is comparatively pure and simple. We should also express our appreciations to those who can make our university life more colorful, especially at a time when it is comparatively easier for us to accept something new and different.
