W: Harry, how did you first know that you had diabetes?
M: Erm I was on a camping holiday with my parents and my mother happened to read an article which described the symptoms which are desperate thirst and also urinating a lot.
W: Did you share those symptoms?
M: Yes, because we were camping, my mother filled up the water buckets for the morning the night before. I’d drunk 3 gallons of water during the night.
W: Good heavens! And did you feel ill?
M: Yeah, I feel like very thirsty, really thirsty and sweating a lot and just tired, I can’t do anything.
W: So she took you off to the doctor, did she?
M: Yeah, where.., to a nearby hospital the next morning.
W: And how old were you when all this happened?
M: I was five and a half.
W: So what’s the treatment now for diabetes?
M: Well it depends on when and sort of how you get diabetes. I have insulin injections for the rest of my life because I am not producing enough insulin.
W: What can we do to control diabetes in daily life?
M: Sometimes it can be controlled just by diet. You know, you have um plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit, and cut down on fats.
