                                             Fight Against Telecom Fraud
    Two men have been arrested in connection with a telecom fraud case in east China’s Shandong Province, believed to have led to the death of a teenager.
    The case came to public attention following widespread media reports of the death of Xu Yuyu, an 18-year-old high school graduate in Linyi City.
Xu was reported to have lost 9,900 yuan (1,490 US dollars) of her university tuition fees to telecom fraudsters and, according to the reports, died of a cardiac arrest on Aug. 19, 2016.
    Just a few miles away, another student, Song Zhenning, was also reported to have died in the same way, having lost money in another fraud case.
A third similar incident has also been reported in the city.
    "In those cases, the suspects all provided accurate information about the victims, such as their enrollment information or the bank account number, which means some related departments might be connected with the criminal party," Zhu Xiaoding, a Beijing-based lawyer, said.
    Tian Zumeng, from the Education Ministry, said that university students should be alert to such fraud and not take it for granted if someone asks you to provide your bank account and passwords.
    "Justice and administrative departments should, in solving these cases, investigate thoroughly and call criminals to account," Zhu said.
    Meng Jianzhu, head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, made the following remarks during an inspection visit to Shanghai, saying that " To curb fraud, laws and regulations should be updated and judicial interpretation should be released in a timely manner to provide legal authority for handling relevant cases. "

    Two shocking deaths caused by telecom fraudsters who have been arrested bring this rampant crime into public attention. Both personal alertness and national combat are urgently called for to bring the grisly crime to full justice.
    A public plague, telecom fraud feeds itself greedily on the infringement of personal information. Among the mounting cases, only those facilitated with accurate information about the victims have a higher shot of hit. So the real culprit—theft of personal information—must be smashed. Moreover, laws and regulations should be updated and judicial interpretation should be released in a timely manner to enable legal authorities to handle relevant cases. Thirdly, new technologies including big data and cloud computing should be applied to fight against telecom fraud which is also becoming more intelligent. Lastly, the public should raise their awareness of protecting their individual information and avoiding leaks that can result in great losses.
    In a word, a combination of measures should be implemented to prevent and battle against this kind of hideous vice, or we will remain troubled by the deception every now and then.
