M: Ruth, what is something you are afraid of, like snakes, spiders or rats?
W: Probably sharks.
M: Sharks? Why sharks? I don’t think people can get close to sharks very easily.
W: I know that sounds quite irrational (不合理的). I don’t live near the sea, but the thought of being eaten by a shark often appears in my mind. It’s horrific (可怕的). I’m really very frightened every time I think of sharks.
M: Have you ever seen a shark?
W: No, thankfully. I think I’d run a mile. I have just seen them in some movies. So what are you afraid of? Anything that frightens you just like a shark does to me?
M: I don’t know what I’m really afraid of. I guess I don’t like heights too much. Yeah, so I have to admit that when I’m on a plane, I get kind of freaked out. When I fly, I keep thinking "How is this thing staying in the air?" And then it makes me too nervous to enjoy my flight.
W: So I guess you’re always happy to land.
M: Yeah, yeah. Always, always, very happy to land. And often when I go home, I have to fly across the Pacific and there’s no land, so I look out of the window and think, "Ah, if something goes wrong with the plane, we can’t land anymore. " But that’s very irrational because most accidents, I think, happen over mountains.
W: If you landed in the sea, there might be sharks.
M: That’s true. How do you feel when you fly?
W: I quite like flying actually. I mean I’m quite used to flying. I’ve flown to a lot of places. If it’s a long-haul flight, I guess it’s a bit boring. But I like the handheld computers you get to play with.
M: Yeah, those are nice.
W: They’re good.
M: So what’s the food like? I know that you’re a vegetarian (素食主义者). How do you like the food during flights?
W: Oh, well, the last time I flew I didn’t get any vegetarian food. I think I forgot to tell them, so I had to eat the chicken, whatever.
M: Really? You actually ate the chicken?
W: No, I didn’t eat it. Actually, I just had it in front of me.
M: Yeah, I heard that the vegetarian meals are actually better than the chicken or beef meal.
W: Really, they’re quite good.
M: Well, it was really an interesting conversation we had today.
W: Absolutely. Everybody is afraid of something, aren’t they? It is quite normal.
M: Yeah, we’re just humans after all. We have likes and dislikes. That just makes our life more colorful!
