Imagine taking a ship across the Pacific Ocean.One day you look out at the water and see a layer of garbage that extends all the way to the horizon.This may sound like a nightmare, but unfortunately, it exists.Known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, this area of heavily-polluted water covers an area at least twice the size of France and possibly much larger.Where did it come from, though, and what can be done about it?
The North Pacific Gyre is an ocean current that circles clockwise in the northern expanse of the Pacific Ocean.The current passes the West Coast of the United States, the Philippines, and Japan.Garbage from these countries and others is swept out to sea and added to the mass of waste in the center.There is little wind across this central region, so most of the garbage is trapped there by the circulating water.
Approximately 80% of the trash is believed to come from land, with the other 20% dropped from passing ships.The garbage, mostly plastic, comprises bottles, food packaging, discarded packing material, and other waste.Over time, sunlight breaks down the plastic into smaller and smaller pieces.When it is small enough, it is consumed by plankton, fish, marine birds, and other organisms.This plastic builds up in their bodies and sickens or kills them.The pollution affects animals at higher levels of the food chain as well, including humans.
There is hope, however.A plan called Project Kaisei has been developed to study the garbage patch and deploy (部署) a fleet of ships dragging special nets to clean up the plastic without catching fish.This plan is sponsored by the United Nations, several American universities, and many foundations and private corporations.The waste will be recycled, thus putting a very serious environmental problem to a positive use.
