The first Olympic games were held in 766 B.C. at Olympia, in ancient Greece. After that, the games were held at intervals until 393 A. D., when they were stopped by the Ro man Conquerors.
The first game lasted only one day and there was only one contest. It was a short race. Afterwards, additional races and other events were added, and the duration was extended to seven days.
The modern Olympic Games were started in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Since then the games have been held every four years in different countries in turn. But there were no games in 1916, 1940 and 1944 because of Word Wars I and II. Athletic contests (track and field events) are still the main feature, but many more sport events have been added, such as swimming, diving, gymnastics, weight lifting.
The Olympics start with the arrival in the stadium of a torch, which is lighted on Mount Olympus by the sun’s rays. The Olympic Flame burns throughout the games until the closing ceremony.
The Olympic flag is one with five interlocking rings of different colors, which symbolize the uniting of all five continents participating in the games.
