问题     After New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine sustained serious injuries in a car accident April 12, many of the reports focused on his failure to wear a seat belt. While it’s impossible to tell exactly how a seatbelt would have protected him, the terrible accident was a pure reminder that despite the barrage(一连串)of public-service admonitions(告诫)—and fines in some states for failing to wear a seat belt—not everyone does it automatically. But that’s not to say that the push for car safety isn’t having an effect. Seatbelt use has gone up by 10 percent since 2000 hitting a record 81 percent nationwide in 2006, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). And the agency reports that safety belts saved an estimated 15,434 lives in 2004. But for some groups, particularly teens and young adults, usage still lags. Sixty-two percent of the 5,135 young people ages 16 to 20 killed when riding in passenger vehicles in 2004 were not wearing safety belts, according to the NHTSA.
So if you’re the parent of a teen, remind them to wear a seat belt every time they get into a car. Yes, even it’s just for a short ride and even if they’re in the back seat. And for kids under 13, be sure to follow these vehicle safety guidelines from the NHTSA.
-Children from birth until age 1 or under 20 pounds should ride in the back seat in a rear-facing child safety seat.
-Children over 1 year old and weighing more than 20 pounds can ride in a forward-facing child safety seat in the back seat.
-All children who have outgrown child safety seats should be properly restrained in booster(辅助的)seats until they are at least g years old or 4 feet,9 inches tall.
-Once children outgrow their booster seats, they can use an adult seat belt in the back seat as long as it fits properly(the lap belt should lie across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt should fit across the chest).
-New rules require manufacturers to phase in "smart" air bags for all 2007 cars. The new air bags are constructed so they don’t injure smaller passengers in the front seat. But because many current cars still have old technology you should keep kids in the back seat until they are at least 13.
