Margaret Mitchell, the author of the enormously popular novel Gone With the Wind, died in 1949 at the age of forty-nine. She was killed by a reckless driver whose own excuse for his carelessness was "everybody does it".
"Peggy" Mitchell wrote her only book in 1936. It【S1】______a Pulitzer Prize and the motion picture adaptation won the Academy Award for best picture, in 1939.
In the summer of 1949, Margaret Mitchell had been considering beginning【S2】______again. But Miss Mitchell, frightened, pulled away from her husband, and ran in the direction the car had veered. She was hit and fell ’unconscious. She died of a skull fracture after five days in critical condition.
The driver unconscious was sentenced to eighteen months【S5】______prison for involuntary manslaughter (过失杀人). He had already been arrested twenty-eight times in the previous ten years for reckless driving. Eight of the arrests had resulted in convictions(定罪).
