Many Americans enjoy running. / And one kind of race, the marathon, has captured the imagination of people all over the nation. / The race has roots in ancient history. / The Boston Marathon in Massachusetts is the oldest marathon which was started in 1897. / At the early stage, male racing officials did not believe women could run marathons. / It was not until 1972 that women could officially compete in Boston. /
